Chains & Transmissions

When buying a new bike - or a complete new transmission, get (at least one) spare chain. Then, every month, or more frequently if the chain gets really mucky, take off the chain, clean-up all the sprockets and chainwheels, fit the next clean chain, and clean, oil and store the one you just took off. That way, you'll be running on clean transmission most of the time, you'll spread the wear and make everything last longer. (I read this in a magazine somewhere, and it seems to work!)

Dick Murphy

Always keep your chain clean and well oiled.  If it ever breaks, don't just fit a new chain.  New front chain-rings and rear sprockets/rear block are needed if your bike is to ever run smoothly again.
