Mike Westley says "Visit Hartshill Hayes Country Park
at Baxterley, near Atherstone. Marvellous views from the C.P. looking down on Atherstone. Canal nearby too. Only down side, is having to dismount through parts of the country park - but, well, you have to stop for the views. Nice pub at Baxterley
(didn't go on bike, but I'm sure they'd welcome the trade) played darts, and dominoes with the locals" .

Canals form easy cycle routes in various regions of the country, Birmingham
being one of those. The towpaths are generally flat and always traffic free.
Unfortunately, some are impassible or just come to an unexpected end. Others,
while rideable have other hazards such as blind bends, narrow sections or steps.
British Waterways therefore don't advise cycling on some sections of canal. While many cyclists don't carry a cycling permit when using the canal network, they should. These are readily available on the Web. All users of the canal network should respect both facilities available as well as other users. Pedestrians, cyclists and fishermen all share the towpath and care must be taken when passing each other. Inexperienced towpath cyclists should also be particularly aware of uneven or slippery surfaces - falling in to the very cold water is not a pleasant experience! If you do, don't panic, much of the network is not deep and you can just stand up! Further information on British Waterways and using canals is available on the BW site.

Cycling in Sandwell is similar in some ways to Push Bikes, and
originated from an initiative by people in the Sandwell Health Authority and Sandwell
Agenda 21 in 1997.
It is now a growing Local Agenda 21 partnership made up of over 550
individuals and 20 organisations who want to help with getting more people
out and about on their bikes in and around Sandwell. The group works to keep people informed about what is on offer to all types of cyclist and is actively involved in putting together plans for safer cycling routes and better facilities for cyclists in Sandwell. Cycling in Sandwell produced the Sandwell Cycling Strategy, which has been endorsed by Sandwell Council. However, progress with implementation of the cycle route network in the Strategy has been slow and this is an issue of major concern to the group. There are also monthly bike rides, quarterly meetings and a full colour, 12 page newsletter twice a year. Contact them for details of the rides and meeting dates. People who live or cycle in Sandwell and wish to join, should contact the group. Membership is free and they should indicate whether they would like a copy of the Cycling Strategy and information about the group's meetings.
