Carrying Bikes in Portugal
Days Out Cycle Routes Cycle Holidays & Breaks

Special note for PORTUGAL - Portugal has legislation affecting the carriage of cycles and motorcycles on other vehicles. It is now forbidden to carry bikes on the rear of cars. They are permitted on caravans, as long as the bikes do not exceed the total width of the vehicle, do not increase it's overall length by more than 45cm (!) or be any higher than 4 metres from the ground. Bikes can be carried on the rear of motor caravans, but scooters and motorcycles cannot.

It is always wise to check any motoring legislation for any country you are visiting.

Bike Access' Web Site holds information supplied by contributors to various cycling web discussion groups, which reviews their experiences on various airlines and rail networks and explores the various shipping opportunities.

If a full-blown holiday is not your thing, there are many places throughout the U.K that can provide, or give information about, places where you can cycle away from the traffic, These range from converted railways which are easy to ride, to challenging off-road courses. The obvious places to start are Sustrans who can provide maps of the whole of the national cycle network, and the Forestry Commission who have visitor centres up and down the country, with waymarked trails around such places as Cannock Chase and the Forest of Dean, and many, many more.

The Wales Tourist Board produces a series of "Active Wales" brochures including one entitled "Cycling Wales" (Call them on the Information Hotline 0800 243 731, or the Brochure Hotline 029 2045 7766). This contains a wealth of information to suit all tastes, from long-distance riding to days out just pottering around the lanes, or tackling some serious off-road courses. Examples include the infamous "Red Bull" mountain bike course near Coed y Brenin, and trails around the reservoirs which provide Birmingham's water supply.

In addition, three small Welsh towns with bike rental shops have joined forces to promote cycling holidays in the surrounding countryside. Their brochure encourages cyclists to explore the scenery around Llanwrtyd Wells, Builth Wells and Rhayader. Brochure line: 0800 273747
